Yikes, have I made a mistake in calling my blog, “Rev Rob’s Roar.” Is it negative or positive? On the internet you can find anything. Foremost is the sermon by C.H. Spurgeon, the Roaring Lion, Nov. 17, 1861. Known as the Prince of Preachers in London, he has had a wide following in America too. His text is from I Peter 5: 8, “Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around looking for someone to devour. Resist him, be steadfast in your faith. . . .” Oh no, the enemy strikes again!?!
But then again, I must not panic. Look in the Bible , there are at least ten notations of the lion in a positive association with God, the Tribe of Judah and the Messiah. For example, in Genesis 49:9 “O Judah, you are a lion’s cub, you return from the prey, my son, like a lion, he crouches and lies down, like a lioness–who dares to rouse him?” Then again, the prophet Hosea 11:10 says “They will follow the Lord, he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. ” And then too in Revelation 5:5, “Do not weep, see the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has triumphed.”
So, as I meditate on passages like these and trust in the Holy Spirit, I affirm the positive emphasis of the Lion’s Roar for my blog. Amen.
